The Politecnico di Torino offers excellence in technology and acknowledges its historical context. It promotes the ability to carry out theoretical or applied research, and also the capacity to achieve concrete and reliable productive processes or organise services and facilities. At the Politecnico, today's needs are analysed to design a sustainable tomorrow. By the end of his or her degree, a Politecnico di Torino graduate has gained a vast, many-sided range of skills and knowledge. The Politecnico has almost 25,000 students studying on 108 courses (forty 3-year degree courses; about thirty 5-year degrees; thirty-one degrees at post-graduate level - doctorates and other post-graduate specialisations). In the year 2001 the Politecnico had 4,400 students in the first year, 2,226 graduates in the 5-year degree and 420 diploma holders. Each year, between lectures, laboratories and practical exercises there are 170,000 hours of teaching.
There is a staff of 850 lecturers and researchers, and 760 administration staff. There are 7 Schools, 18 Departments and 7 Interdepartmental Centres.
The income in the 2002 forecast balance is 216 million Euros (in 1990 the figure was 52 million). The Ministero dell'Istruzione Università e Ricerca or M.I.U.R. (Ministry for Universities Education and Research) - contributes 103 million Euros - 90 million Euros are the Fondo di Finanziamento Ordinario (Ordinary Finance Fund).
Since 1998 the Politecnico has been heavily involved in the development of vocational education and training system both on a regional and national basis.
Politecnico has been the promoter and the scientific coordinator of the HELEN project. Activities mainly concerned the definition and development of an international virtual community.
