VET system in France: From CEDEFOP (short description)
The French education & training system is divided in primary, secondary and tertiary education.
The primary and the secondary education are compulsory from 6 to 16 years old; the primary education lasts 5 years and the secondary education 6 years: the students attend the junior high school (4 years) and then in the last 2 years they can choose between two possibilities:
- a general or a technical high school which awards a diploma (Baccalauréat);
- a vocational high school which awards a CAP or BEP (2 years) or a BAC Pro (3 years).
The tertiary education is provided by Universities or higher schools and it is divided in two cycles:
- Bachelor's Degree and Advanced Technical Diploma (BTS) - 2 years - issued by schools or Tertiary Technical Diploma (DUT) issued by Universities - 3 years;
- the second cycle enables to obtain a Master's degree - 2 years - awarded by the Universities or Grandes Ecoles.
