Currently the Italian system has not implemented a framework to validate the informal and informal learning. In 2006 a Technical Board promoted by the Ministry of Labour was established in order to discuss about the assessment and the recognition of the competences acquired in non-formal and informal learning contexts.
The profile is divided into Capitalizable Units (CU) and Formative Units (FU). The CU is meant as a group of competences recognized by the labour market as expected outcomes at the end of the training path; a FU is the benchmark to recognize the competences as well as an useful instrument for design purposes.
The validation of credits among different education and training paths is theoretically possible; in Italy it has been applied in various contexts by following different approaches. In order to set up a real system to validate the credits, it is necessary to code the education and training programmes according to competence-based standards. The credits acquired in IFTS courses will be recognized by the University whether both training institutions have drawn up previous agreements.
