The professional profiles and the lowest standards of competences are set out at national level.
At regional level such standards are implemented and adjusted in order to meet local requirements. IFTS courses are structured in terms of units meant as a group of competences which can be recognized in the labour market.
The units can be certified and validated in terms of credits to be transferred to other training contexts (other IFTS schools, VET courses, University) according to specific agreements previously drawn up between the parties. No specific workload or number of hours are associated to a credit.
A course can last from two to four semesters for a total amount of 1000 hours; ITS can last four or at most six semesters. The internship is mandatory and it should amount to at least 30% of the whole course.
IFTS courses are selected and funded by submitting a regional public call for proposal: a person can attend one IFTS course whether he/she holds a secondary school degree.
In case a person doesn't hold such degree, he/she can attend the course only according to specific admittance requirements and he/she should pass a test on the competences held.
The qualification is divided into two parts: the common part describes the working processes, the activities, the tasks, the competences, the certification procedures and the learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and competences (KSC).
The second part (subsidiarity) represents the training path in terms of Formative Units; the formal, non-formal and informal learning; the evaluation procedures; the recognition and the validation.
A certificate or diploma is an official document that registers the qualification and the learning outcomes achieved; it can deal with the whole course or part of it. The Certificate Supplement is used in the IFTS system.
